Preventing Veteran Homelesness
Preventing Veteran Homelesness
Past National Commander of The American Legion, Tom Bock’s Military Veterans Benefits Foundation: Works to extend a helping hand to enhance the lives of our Veteran men and women. It’s because of their service and sacrifice that we enjoy our good fortunes and benefits. By joining our organization you can make a difference in our Veterans lives and receive great benefits too!The mission of Homeowners for the Homeless is to augment the programs established by National Veterans Service organizations. The emphasis being to provide additional funds that support: emergency financial assistance, education scholarships, medical and temporary housing for those seeking treatment for PTSD and TBI. Each of the designated benefactor organizations will receive proportional funding from our membership fee to supplement their existing programs. Our goal in establishing this mission is to provide additional financial resources and direct those funds to specific veteran needs. In addition, we are establishing a grant process to offer funding to organizations that are providing direct medical assistance to meet the needs of individual patients.
Statement of Facts
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that 131,000 veterans are homeless on any given night. And approximately twice that many experience homelessness over the course of a year. Conservatively, one out of every three homeless men who is sleeping in a doorway, alley or box in our cities and rural communities has put on a uniform and served this country.
Approximately 40% of homeless men are veterans, although veterans comprise only 34% of the general adult male population. The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans estimates that on any given night, 200,000 veterans are homeless, and 400,000 veterans will experience homelessness during the course of a year (National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, 2006). 97% of those homeless veterans will be male (Department of Veterans Affairs, 2008).

“Homelessness in America is a travesty, and veterans’ homelessness is disgraceful. Left unattended and forgotten, these men and women, who once proudly wore the uniforms of this nation’s armed forces and defended her shores, are now wandering her streets in desperate need of medical and psychiatric attention and financial support. While there have been great strides in ending homelessness among America’s veterans, there is much more that needs to be done. We must not forget them.”
